BARRELBACK 19 - #H 44
Classic mahogany runabouts featuring simplified modern construction.

At last! Classic mahogany runabout designs that capture the look and feel of the past but feature the best in modern, simplified construction specially designed for today's do it yourself woodworker.

You'll be hard pressed to tell the difference in these designs from the runabouts of yesteryear. Each features a shapely hull with reverse curved flaring topsides forward, tumblehome sterns aft, and a generous roll all along the deck edge. The Barrelback model replicates those boats produced around 1940. But unlike traditional boats often plagued by leaking seams and flexing hulls, these models feature tight, stiff, strong, and lightweight cold molded wood/epoxy double diagonal planking.

Bottoms on these designs total 1/2 " thick (4 layers ) with 3/8" on the sides (3 layers ). On the sides, the final layer is applied lengthwise, emulating genuine planking but with minimum maintenance. Husky motor stringers double as jib members to key in frames, and run nearly the length of the bottom. Closely spaced longitudinal battens support the planking over simple, sturdy sawn frames. In fact, had such construction technology existed in the past this is how past boats would have been built.

Power comes from a gasoline direct drive motor located amidship. We recommend a contemporary powerplant over traditional types because they're lighter in weight, more compact, more reliable, and offer higher output for a given size. However, these boats should not be over powered; practical speeds should be limited to the 30's and 40's.

The plans also include details for increasing boats length to 20' 1" by respacing frames, shortening is not recommended.Design No. H 44
