|This 26' racing cruising sloop is an excellent example of good planning, outstanding design and proper application of materials. Generally, sail boats are designed either for racing or cruising but this boat was designed for both.
The finest feature is the extra roomy cabin which is unique in a boat of this size. It sleeps four comfortably, contains a complete galley and head. Because the hatch cover raises up forward there is full head room in the cabin. This also makes the cabin light and airy.
It was designed to heel easily but the deep hard chines buoy the boat solidly on its best sailing lines making it an exceptionally fast boat. Its hydrofoil fin affixed to the slightly rockered shallow v bottom gives it extraordinary stability.
The motor well is designed to take up to a 10 hp outboard motor which will drive her close to hull speed. The racing performance record of this boat is phenomenal, having regularly beaten racing cruising crafts of greater overall length, either boat for boat or handicap. If your desires lean towards a fast racing boat or you wish a roomy safe, family cruiser, this is the proper boat for you.
Construction semi monocoque design without internal frames, the great strength of the hull deriving from the 1/2" plywood skin sheathed in fiberglass and longitudinal stringers which results in a light, strong hull.
The Clark Craft plan set includes the official Thunderbird plans plus full size patterns. The weight of a competitive boat runs slightly over 3,900 lbs, the class minimum. The boat features a 1530 lb. cast iron fin keel, blade rudder, and self bailing cockpit. Spars are of solid spruce. Auxiliary power is by outboard motor of 5 to 10 hp located in a well.
